Save Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

I've been out of the console-gaming loop for a number of years, and this game kind of reinforced my decision to put the controller down. My last experience with a console game was a Ratchet and Clank game for PS2. Although the PS3 does have much better graphics, I don't find the gaming experience all that much better than it was on the PS2.

The worst thing about this game was the ridiculous techno-babble dialog in "story mode". How these actors said those lines with a straight face is beyond me. I laughed out loud many times when Superman, Wonder Woman and Shazzam spouted off about yellow energy rifts and super rage. Even 40's pulp science fiction had more believeable dialog than this stinker did. It was also really funny when the characters would talk for a few minutes, and then one of them would get into a stance and say "FIGHT!"

The gameplay was just what one would expect from a fighting game. Two guys (or girls. Or a guy and a girl) square off in some big open area and start beating each other up. They shoot beams, firballs, ice, bullets, lightning, and things of that nature at each other. Somehow, a good middle block can mitigate the effects of a flamethrower, but that's just a part of fighting games in general, and really isn't a terrible problem with this title.

Story mode is really just silly fight porn. The story isn't designed to tell an actual story, it's designed to get the characters into one on one fights. The pretense for these fights is usually pretty inane, and even when a DC Hero fights a DC villain, they have to exchange a few campy lines before one of them says "Fight!" and the fight is on.

One thing I always hated about fighting games like Mortal Kombat is the insane button combinations you have to learn to pull off the really flashy moves. The computer, on the other hand, can do the same flashy moves without mashing any buttons at all, which puts the poor fingered human player at a disadvantage. Games like God of War prove that a game doesn't require insane button combinations to enable the player to perform flashy moves. That's not really a knock against this game in particular, but more of a knock against fighting games in general.

My verdict is pretty simple. If you like fighting games, you'll probably not mind the horrendously dumb dialog. If you're looking for something a little more in depth, then this game probably won't satisfy.
